The following pages describe several Caiman MKII modifications
that have been tried and tested, and proven to have increased the
performance of the Caiman MKII.
Some modifications mentioned on the internet, but not described on
these pages, were found to be far too complicated to implement, or
could damage the PCB if the work was not carried out to near
perfection, or were improved upon by the modifications described on
these pages.
Venom 3 mod
Gator Upgrade
Venom 3 modification & Gator upgrade
The Venom-3 modification is designed to improve the audio quality of the signal
output from the DAC chip.
The Gator upgrade adds more depth and body to the sound. It is a two stage
upgrade consisting of a Gator Firmware and several component changes. .
Venom & Gator mod
R47 & R48
Replace each with a 100 Ohms resistorResistor used:.
1/4Watt Metal Film
C47 & C48
Replace each with a 22nF capacitor.Capacitor used:
WIMA 22nF/63Volt leg spacing = 2.5mm Type = MKP
C43, C44, C49
Replace each with a 100uF/4V size B Tantalum SMD cap
The following picture shows the PCB after
fitting of the Venom-3 mod and the Gator
capacitor changes.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Make sure that you solder the SMD caps facing the right way.
The following mod is the Gator
Firmware mod. The specially
amended firmware makes better
use of the Gator caps mod in
order to deliver a deeper and
enriched sound .
Gator Firmware
Remove the firmware that you currently have fitted and replace it with the CMII- GFU.
Position of Firmware
Make sure to fit the new Firmware with the writing on the label facing the same way as in the picture.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
The Gator Firmware only has three modes of decoding.
